“Ward 19” with godlike staff must read
This is a wonderful ward..all the staff including doctors and nurses are very kind.
All the affairs of the patients are done by them. In simple terms, they even give the medicines and water to drink. At no time will the sound of yelling and cursing at the patients be heard from inside this ward. The officials in this ward are very humble to call old patients as mother and father and to call young children as daughter and son.
You don’t have to wait for hours to register and enter the ward. From the moment the patient is admitted to the ward, to the point where he/she takes off the bed sheet and takes care of his/her toilet and toilet needs, they guide each and every patient.
Words are very kind, actions are very humane, patients are treated like friends until they enter the ward and leave the ward. Everyone is treated the same.
Now you may be thinking that this is about a private hospital.. Yes, people really dislike the services of public hospitals in Sri Lanka.. When that happens, people feel that they have to go to a private hospital and pay money to get these things. No, but this ward is a ward of a government hospital.
This is a surgical ward for injured patients. In this ward, there are not only those who can’t have limbs but also patients who have faced bigger operations. What is the experience of visiting a private hospital? A similar service is available from ward 19 of this hospital which was a government hospital.
Medicine alone is not enough to heal a disease. I have been to government hospitals. It has been stopped like that. Screams of nurses. The criticisms of nursing assistants are endless. For the patients who are lying in bed unable to eat bread. I have also felt the helplessness of being scolded like that.
You can’t go and talk about anything. Like me, you definitely have experience with nurses, doctors, and nursing assistants who rush into your body. In hospitals with such officers, even if the patient turns to the other side of the bed, they see the wrong side.
But Ward 19 is not like that. When it comes to cleanliness, the ward is cleaner than a private hospital. Not a single drop of dirt can be found. Not even a hair has fallen on the floor. The beds are very tidy and beautiful. There is no noise in the ward.
It didn’t even take two hours after entering the ward for me to observe this. I entered the ward around eight o’clock when I realized about the strange administrative nature of the ward. I said it was strange because I had experienced several government hospitals. Really, this kind service of theirs is strange to me. Amazing. I am not talking about other wards of this hospital, but only about ward 19.
Around ten o’clock, tea is served in this ward.. an attendant comes with the tea pot. A nurse brings biscuits in a tray. I was surprised. She goes to the bed of every patient and gives them tea if needed.. The nurse goes to the patients with a very smiling face and gives them biscuits.
My turn has come. Although I don’t really like to drink tea, I thought that if I don’t drink tea at this time, it would be disrespectful to them, so I bought some tea. Took one biscuit too. The nurse pointed the tray towards me again and told me to buy another biscuit with a very smiling face. So, isn’t this ward amazing? Compared to my experience in several other hospitals, this ward is amazing.
Doctors and nurses are very concerned about every patient. It should be the same, right? The nurse of today is not the nurse of tomorrow. The duty changes. But before they go home, the nurses who come on duty the next day inform the other about the new patients who entered the ward the day before.
Before lunch, soup is given to all the patients in this ward. Not only the nursing assistants in this ward but also the nurses participate in distributing it. The time for lunch came. The nurses and assistants went to the poor patients who were getting food from the canteen and could not even get up.
Sometimes doctors prescribe some patients to eat more eggs due to protein deficiency. I saw that such patients are given at least two eggs per meal in this ward.
All the staff provide the best kind service to the patients in that ward. Any patient can talk to the doctor in the ward.. You can know the details about their condition and the patients will never be shouted at.
The most special thing is that there is no need for another person to stay with the patient in this hospital ward. Everything that the patient needs is done by the staff of that ward. Same for me.. They give their best to give the patients a comfortable sleep during the night.
It was around three in the morning..a nurse came and woke me up. “Good morning and smiled very kindly. You have one medicine pill to drink. Here is the water. Drink this medicine pill. Did you have any problems after drinking the medicine at night?” Again she asked me.. “They are so kind.
The staff work very quickly when bringing the patients who have undergone a surgery from the operation theater to the ward. The patient’s bed is made in order. He comes and asks about difficulties and difficulties. So how can you not write that well?
The day before the surgery, the doctor as well as the nursing officers inform the patient. Looking for the necessary things. There is no displeasure or unhappiness with the patients.
On the day of the operation, the patients concerned are prepared in order.
From the people in charge of sanitation in this ward, everyone is working hard. The ward is swept and mopped several times a day. Toilets and bathrooms are cleaned very well. There is no sorrow.
Previously, I had to sit on a chair at the end of the ward for an hour to cut the ticket at a hospital where I had stopped and write the ticket to go home. I had to visit the hospital ward another day to get my medical written. When asked about both these incidents from the former staff of the ward, they are not responsible about it. The answer is like hitting.
But Ward 19 is not like that. The doctor informed me in the morning that you can go home today. After some time a nurse came and told me to write the medical that you can go home today. Within a very short time, the doctor called me and got the necessary information for the medical. As soon as it was over, a nurse prepared all the necessary arrangements to leave the ward. Everything took about half an hour. When saying goodbye to the ward, they say goodbye very kindly.
If I went to a private hospital, I get all this for the money I pay. But like me, this kind service of theirs is received by other patients as a way of doing justice to the salary they receive through government service.
So this ward is amazing and strange. I have seen hospital staff treating patients like demons. I want to say again and again that the staff in this ward are like gods.
Everyone has very unpleasant experiences with government hospitals. But there are officers who are very kind and honest. It is our duty to make a mention of them somewhere. It is our duty to appreciate them. That’s why I wrote about them in this way. That wonderful ward is in Ragama Hospital. Ward No 19…Plastic Surgery Unit. Patients who are undergoing surgery, burn patients, acid attack patients are staying in this ward, apart from this kind of kindness that such a patient needs… not arrogance… Ward 19 is a ward full of kindness, mercy, intimacy and love. So including the chief doctor Mr. Kolitha Karunadasa. This post is a tribute to all the staff.
Once I heard a grandmother who was in this ward saying, “This Missile needs to attain Buddhahood.” It’s true that these Missiles should receive the merits of all castes
